US Senator proposes bill to end dual citizenship

(MENAFN) US Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced legislation aimed at ending dual citizenship in the United States. The proposed “Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025”, unveiled Monday, would require anyone holding dual nationality to renounce their foreign citizenship and pledge “exclusive allegiance” to the US in order to maintain their American status.

Under the bill, Americans with dual citizenship would have one year to submit a written renunciation of either their foreign or US citizenship. Failure to comply would be considered a voluntary relinquishment of US citizenship. “If you want to be an American – it’s all or nothing.

It’s time to end dual citizenship for good,” Moreno, a Colombia-born senator from Ohio who naturalized at 18, said in a press release.

Reports suggest that the legislation could affect prominent figures such as Slovenia-born US First Lady Melania Trump and her son Barron, who are believed to have retained Slovenian citizenship. Other US personalities potentially impacted include Elon Musk, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks, and Salma Hayek.

Experts note the bill could face constitutional challenges, as it conflicts with the 14th Amendment, which protects US citizens from losing citizenship unless they voluntarily give it up. While no official registry tracks dual citizenship, estimates indicate that over 40 million Americans—roughly 12% of the population—may hold it.

The bill aligns with President Donald Trump’s immigration priorities. Since returning to office, Trump has pursued policies tightening border security, including stricter asylum rules, increased detentions of unauthorized migrants, and an attempt to end automatic birthright citizenship, though courts blocked the latter, citing constitutional violations.
