Petro Rejects Military Escalation in Latin American Regions
He delivered these comments during the inaugural session of the Latin America and the Caribbean International Economic Forum, an event convened in Panama by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF).
Although he avoided explicitly identifying Washington, Petro alluded to a recent US strike against Venezuela earlier this month, declaring: “We do not want Caracas or any country in the Americas to be targeted with missiles, neither from the north nor from the south.
"Our peoples have shaped history in such a way that we should begin to see ourselves as a Latin American and Caribbean civilization -- diverse, extremely different, yet interconnected."
Highlighting a range of shared global pressures, the Colombian leader maintained that challenges such as narcotics trafficking, the climate emergency, and intensifying international confrontations can only be addressed through deeper regional cooperation.
Emphasizing that the true power of Latin America does not stem from weaponry or financial capital, Petro stated: “True wealth lies in life, in nature, in culturaldiversity, and in the search to offer the world a peaceful alternative instead of war. Will we agree to be fragmented and isolated, or will we build a genuine unity?”
The gathering was attended by the presidents of Brazil, Panama, Bolivia, Jamaica, Ecuador, and Guatemala, alongside Colombia’s president-elect and Chilean president-elect Jose Antonio Kast.
