Trump Backs "El Tigre" in Colombia Runoff
Trump praised the candidate — widely known by his fighting nickname "El Tigre" ("The Tiger") — as a capable and resolute figure with Colombia's best interests at heart.
"The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The runoff was triggered after no candidate secured an outright majority in the first round of voting. Preliminary results released Sunday by Colombian electoral authorities confirmed that the race would proceed to a second round, with de la Espriella set to square off against rival Ivan Cepeda on June 21.
Trump left little ambiguity about the depth of his backing, framing the endorsement in both personal and political terms.
"Because of his tremendous accomplishments in life, and his political support for me, personally, it is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement," Trump said.
The public intervention by a sitting US president in a Latin American election is likely to reverberate across the region, injecting Washington's weight directly into one of South America's most closely watched electoral contests of the year.
